This quarter hour of music on this album is like an afterthought to the theme and narrative of the main piece it's made to augment, the Leave The Flow LP. I got inspired to do a proper 'encore' release like this ever since Madlib went ahead and effectively doubled the amount of his non-mixtape Medicine Show releases by tacking a bonus disc on nearly every one of them. A 'more is more' format like that has always excited me, and it also reminds me of how expansion packs used to work for video games in their artistic heyday. You would simply get more of what you liked in the main piece, and in a dose that's easy to dock onto it's predecessor with the connection being natural. This means that if you're one of those who still have enough of an attention span to keep your hands off of the shuffle button, you can use this EP to extend Leave The Flow into a 21 track record if you so please.
Speaking of our shuffle generation, it's definitely easy to get frustrated with projects like this because they're so reliant on the listener keeping up and following along to the details in the music. A lot of my artistic growth and progression has been due to me learning the difference between the perspectives of the artist and the listener, and how often something that I consider to be an in-your-face declaration or a statement, the listener might brush off as an annoying hiccup in the flow of the music. I think in the process of trying to find ways to ensure that I deliver my musical and extramusical ideas to the listener, without compromising the structure and composition of the music, has lended itself useful in almost all parts of my production. How to choose better sounds to bring about clearer mixes, how to compose things with real impact, and how to go about structuring the music to reach more and more for that soul-touching all of the people I admire are so effortlessly capable of.
And what I hope to be effortlessly capable of creating this time is continuity. If you really listen hard to the new EP you'll find all kinds of little connections to the main LP, and I think it's successful in picking up where it's big brother left off and giving a fitting finishing touch on the message it's trying to convey.
I hope you enjoy this short little piece I made for you.
And oh yeah, about the track titles - here's a clue for whoever's wondering about why I keep throwing Momo everywhere. And for whoever thought the LP's and the EP's titles sounded familiar but couldn't exactly pin their mind on what it was(or was too lazy to use google.):
